Orange Hot Chocolate

  • Author: Julia
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings 1x

Description

Whole milk infused with strips of fresh orange peel, then whisked with unsweetened cocoa, dark chocolate and a little sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 4 strips Wide strips fresh orange peel, without white pith, from a washed orange
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 2 ounces Dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1/16 teaspoon Fine salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry an orange. Peel four wide strips, avoiding bitter white pith. Put 2 cups whole milk and the peel into a small heavy saucepan; warm over medium-low heat until steaming, about 6 minutes, without a rolling boil. Remove from heat and steep 5 minutes, then remove all peel strips.
  2. In a small cup mix 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa and 1 tbsp granulated sugar with 2 tbsp of the warm infused milk from the saucepan until a smooth paste forms. Whisk paste back into remaining milk.
  3. Return to low heat and add 2 oz finely chopped dark chocolate and 1/16 tsp fine salt. Whisk gently about 3 to 4 minutes until completely melted and smooth; do not boil. Turn off heat and stir in ¼ tsp vanilla.
  4. Divide between two heatproof mugs and serve warm. Taste in a kitchen trial for orange intensity, chocolate sweetness and actual final yield; do not garnish with ingredients not in the recipe.
