Description

This Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy recipe is a comforting meal consisting of juicy, seasoned beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom gravy. It's made simple and accessible for home cooks, designed to bring warmth and togetherness to your family dinner table.

Ingredients

Scale

1.5 lbs Ground Beef (80/20 lean)
1/2 cup Yellow Onion, finely diced
1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Panko or regular)
1 Large Egg
1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 tsp Dijon Mustard
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
2 tbsp Olive Oil (for searing)
8 oz Cremini Mushrooms, sliced
1/2 cup Yellow Onion, finely diced
2 cloves Garlic, minced
2 cups Beef Broth, low sodium
1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
2 tbsp All-Purpose Flour
2 tbsp Butter, unsalted
1 tsp Fresh Thyme, chopped (optional)
Salt and Black Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, 1/2 cup diced yellow onion, breadcrumbs, egg, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp black pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly with your hands until just combined
  2. Divide the mixture into 6-8 oval-shaped patties, about 3/4-inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside
  4. In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter, the sliced mushrooms, and the remaining 1/2 cup diced yellow onion. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until golden and softened. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute
  5. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of flour over the mushroom mixture and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a roux
  6. Gradually pour in the 2 cups of beef broth, whisking to prevent lumps. Stir in 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Bring to a simmer
  7. Return the seared Salisbury steaks to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until cooked through and tender
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve immediately

Notes

For a creamy gravy, stir in 1/4 cup of heavy cream or a tablespoon of cream cheese at the end.
