Slow Cooker Spiced Apple Cider

  • Author: Leo Bennett
  • Total Time: 195 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

An approximately eight-mug batch of pasteurized nonalcoholic cider warmed with whole spices and orange, finished with vanilla.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups Pasteurized unsweetened, nonalcoholic apple cider
  • 3 sticks Cinnamon sticks
  • 6 cloves Whole cloves
  • 6 berries Whole allspice berries
  • 1/2 orange Medium orange, washed and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice half a medium orange; reserve the other half for another use. Pour 8 cups pasteurized unsweetened, nonalcoholic apple cider into a 3- or 4-quart slow cooker.
  2. Add 3 cinnamon sticks, 6 whole cloves, 6 whole allspice berries and the orange slices. Put small spices in a food-safe sachet if desired so they are easy to retrieve. Cover.
  3. Heat on low approximately 3 hours until fully hot and fragrant. Taste carefully before leaving the spices in longer; do not assume every cooker reaches the same temperature in that period.
  4. Remove orange and spices with a fine strainer or sachet. Stir in 1 tsp vanilla extract and ladle into about eight mugs. Record actual volume and flavor strength in a kitchen trial; do not treat this warming method as a substitute for starting with pasteurized cider.
