Ingredients
2 lbs Russet or Yukon Gold Potatoes
12–16 oz Cooked Turkey Ham, diced
4 tbsp Unsalted Butter
1/4 cup All-purpose Flour
3 cups Whole Milk
2 cups Cheddar Cheese, freshly shredded
1 cup Gruyere or Swiss Cheese, freshly shredded
1 small Yellow Onion, finely diced
2 cloves Garlic, minced
1 tsp Dijon Mustard
1/4 tsp Nutmeg, freshly grated
1 tsp Sea Salt, or to taste
1/2 tsp Black Pepper, freshly ground, or to taste
2 tbsp Fresh Parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Wash and thinly slice the potatoes, about 1/8 inch thick
- In a large saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the finely diced onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic mixture. Whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a smooth roux
- Gradually whisk in the milk until the sauce thickens and comes to a gentle simmer, about 5-7 minutes. Reduce the heat to low
- Stir in the Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Add 2 cups of cheddar cheese and 1/2 cup of Gruyere/Swiss cheese to the sauce and stir until smooth
- Arrange one-third of the potato slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. Top with one-third of the turkey ham and ladle one-third of the cheese sauce over. Repeat layers two more times, finishing with cheese sauce
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle remaining Gruyere/Swiss cheese on top
- Continue baking uncovered for 20-30 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender and top is golden brow
- Allow to rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley
Notes
Use freshly grated cheese for a creamier sauce.
Feel free to add extra veggies como blanched broccoli or sautéed spinach.
