Fig and Goat Cheese Crostini. A proposed party crostini with toasted baguette, soft goat cheese, fig preserves, thyme and chopped walnuts. The formula and timing below are working estimates for a future kitchen trial, not a claim that a batch has been made.

A party bite that stays simple
Crisp baguette makes the base for a tangy goat-cheese spread and a small spoon of fig preserves. Fresh thyme and chopped toasted walnuts give each bite a savory edge. Jarred preserves keep the recipe practical for December when ripe fresh figs may be hard to find.
This is an untested sixteen-piece draft. Baguette diameter and the thickness of preserves change how much topping fits without sliding. The thirty-minute estimate includes a short cool after toasting, not the oven preheat.
Choose a thick preserve
Use a plain soft goat cheese log that can spread without tearing the toast. Five ounces divided among sixteen rounds is a modest layer. A thick fig preserve can sit on top, whereas a loose syrup will run off the edge and soak the bread.
A half-inch baguette slice is intended to become crisp in a 400°F oven. Slices thicker than that may remain soft in the center, and very thin ones can darken quickly. Brush lightly with a measured tablespoon olive oil across the tray rather than saturating the bread.
Walnuts are explicitly in the base and are a tree-nut allergen. The cheese adds milk and the baguette adds wheat. If making a nut-free variation, remove walnuts and reassess cross-contact and flavor; do not photograph nuts while promising a nut-free recipe.
Ingredients for 16 crostini
| Ingredient | Amount | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Baguette, cut into 1/2-inch slices | 16 slices | From about half a loaf; exact bread weight varies. |
| Olive oil | 1 tablespoon | Lightly brush bread. |
| Soft plain goat cheese | 5 ounces | Bring to spreadable temperature safely. |
| Thick fig preserves | 1/3 cup | Use about 1 tsp per slice. |
| Fresh thyme leaves | 1 teaspoon | Finishing herb. |
| Toasted walnuts, finely chopped | 1/4 cup | Scatter sparingly. |
| Black pepper | 1/8 teaspoon | Small savory finish. |
Step-by-step method
- Heat oven to 400°F. Cut 16 half-inch baguette slices with a serrated knife. Brush very lightly with 1 tbsp olive oil, spread on a rimmed sheet and toast about 7–10 minutes, turning once, until dry and lightly golden. Cool about 5 minutes.
- Spread approximately 5 oz plain soft goat cheese across the cooled toasts. Spoon about 1 tsp thick fig preserves onto each; 1/3 cup is the measured starting amount and a little may remain.
- Scatter 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, 1/4 cup finely chopped toasted walnuts and 1/8 tsp black pepper across all sixteen pieces. Do not assemble far ahead of serving or the bread may soften.
- Serve promptly. Kitchen-test the baguette diameter, cheese and preserve portions and topping hold during a short party service.
Toast before assembling
Cut sixteen slices, brush with oil and toast for approximately seven to ten minutes, turning once. The center should be dry enough to support cheese. Rest for five minutes so warm bread does not melt the topping, then spread goat cheese gently.
Spoon about a teaspoon fig preserve over each round, finish with the measured thyme, toasted chopped walnuts and pepper, and serve promptly. The one-third cup preserve measure may leave a little extra if the bread is narrow; record the actual amount in a test rather than heaping every piece.
The cited fig-crostini recipe cooks dried figs with Port and also uses fresh figs. This proposal uses neither Port nor fresh figs, and the photo should show a modest dark preserve spoon, not wedges of unavailable fruit.
Keep the crunch at serving time
Assembled toasts may soften as cheese and jam sit on them. Toast bread ahead if useful, keep it protected from moisture, and add toppings close to serving after a trial determines the best window. A make-ahead assembled-crostini promise would be misleading without that check.
If the preserves slide, reduce the dollop or spread the cheese to form a slight edge. If the bread is hard rather than crisp, cut it a little thicker or shorten the toast in a measured second batch. If walnuts taste bitter, check their freshness and toast level before using them.
A balsamic drizzle or honey would add liquid and sweetness not in this card. The image and Pin deliberately avoid it. For a fuller spread, Chefly's French onion ground beef sliders offer a separate substantial bite, not a duplicate crostini.
Leftovers and routing
Store leftover goat cheese and fig preserves according to their labels and keep prepared perishable toppings chilled. A dressed baguette may lose texture in the refrigerator; an exact storage quality window has not been tested. Do not leave dairy toppings on a buffet indefinitely.
The calendar's 'Holiday Desserts & Hosting' route describes an occasion but not this savory recipe's format. Propose a party-appetizer board after checking the account's actual boards; do not assume an invented board is live. Sixteen small crostini are an appetizer, not sixteen complete meals.
Questions about the fig layer
Can I use fresh figs?
They would change the topping volume and availability. The measured December base uses thick preserves only.
Can the whole tray be assembled a day ahead?
Not as an established method. Crisp bread can soften under cheese and jam; test the timing before a make-ahead claim.
Can I omit walnuts?
Yes as a different topping, but adjust the allergy statement and photo and check the rest of the ingredients for cross-contact.
