Hot Spiced Grape Juice

Hot Spiced Grape Juice. A gently warmed 100% purple grape-juice drink steeped with orange, cinnamon and cloves, then strained into small cups. The formula and timing below are working estimates for a future kitchen trial, not a claim that a batch has been made.

A gently mulled juice

Purple grape juice warms with orange slices, whole cinnamon and cloves, then gets a small squeeze of lemon after straining. It is a juice drink for winter guests, not wine, tea or a coffee syrup.

The four small cups and finished sweetness are untested estimates. Use 100% juice and do not add unmeasured sweetener just to mimic a syrup.

Keep the spices whole

Two cinnamon sticks and four cloves can be removed cleanly after steeping. Ground spice would leave sediment and is not a direct substitution.

Wash the orange peel because whole slices steep in the pot, and remove any seeds. The tablespoon lemon juice goes in after straining for a brighter finish.

Step-by-step method

  1. Pour 4 cups 100% purple grape juice into a medium saucepan. Add slices from one washed medium orange, two whole cinnamon sticks and four whole cloves.
  2. Heat over medium-low until steaming, then maintain a gentle simmer approximately 15 minutes without reducing to a syrup or boiling hard. Turn off the heat, cover and steep about ten more minutes.
  3. Strain carefully, discarding the whole spices and orange slices, then stir in 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice. Taste the measured batch before adding anything else; no extra sugar is in this formula.
  4. Ladle into four heatproof small cups and measure actual final volume after a trial. Serve hot without an alcohol claim or a caffeine claim; this recipe is juice-based and has no tea, coffee or wine ingredient.

Warm rather than concentrate

Heat the juice to steaming and a gentle simmer for about fifteen minutes. A hard boil reduces liquid and can turn the proposed four-cup beverage into an overly concentrated drink.

Food.com has a hot spiced grape-juice reference; this independent version uses orange and lemon with a specified covered ten-minute steep. Its final volume has not been measured.

Strain into small cups

Remove all cloves and cinnamon before serving. Four heatproof cups are convenient, but evaporation may leave less than a full cup each; measure the actual batch before using a precise yield claim.

A slice of fresh orange can be a serving prop only if the final photographed drink matches the measured ingredients. Do not use a wineglass and call the beverage mulled wine.

Holding and storage

Serve promptly while hot. No exact make-ahead storage or reheating quality has been tested, and the fruit juice's sugars are not zero simply because no table sugar was added.

This should remain separate from the preceding day's masala chai, which contains black tea and milk.

Spiced juice questions

Does it contain wine?

No. The ingredient list has only juice, citrus and whole spices.

Should I add sugar?

No additional sugar is in the measured working formula; taste the 100% juice batch first.

Are cloves left in the cup?

No. Strain out the whole spices before pouring.
