London Fog Tea Latte. A proposed two-mug Earl Grey tea latte with steamed milk, a measured vanilla finish and lightly frothed top. The formula and timing below are working estimates for a future kitchen trial, not a claim that a batch has been made.

Earl Grey with its own soft cloud
A London Fog is a tea latte: strong Earl Grey brewed in water, sweetened with a little vanilla, then topped with warm frothed milk. It is not espresso with tea flavoring. This two-mug draft keeps the ingredients short and separates tea brewing from milk heating so the bergamot note remains present.
The formula is not tested. Tea bags differ in strength and steeping instructions, and a whisk will not create the same foam as a frother. The fifteen-minute working total includes a five-minute steep while milk warming can overlap; actual mug volume should be checked.
Concentrate, milk and vanilla
Two Earl Grey bags brew in one cup hot water to make a stronger tea concentrate than an ordinary large teapot serving. Follow the brand's water-temperature and steeping guidance when it differs from the proposed four to five minutes. Squeezing bags aggressively can bring out more bitterness.
One cup whole milk is heated separately and frothed before dividing between mugs. Two teaspoons sugar across the batch means about one teaspoon per mug. Half a teaspoon vanilla extract across the batch adds aroma without a full syrup-making step.
Whole milk is an explicit dairy ingredient. A plant milk can foam or separate differently and requires a separate trial and allergen check. Lavender is a familiar optional café addition but is absent from this measured recipe, title image and ingredient table.
Ingredients for 2 mugs
| Ingredient | Amount | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Earl Grey tea bags | 2 bags | Or equivalent loose-leaf tea in a strainer. |
| Hot water | 1 cup | Brew according to package; not boiling milk. |
| Whole milk | 1 cup | Warm and froth separately. |
| Granulated sugar | 2 teaspoons | Dissolve in tea, 1 tsp per mug. |
| Vanilla extract | 1/2 teaspoon | Stir into brewed tea after bags removed. |
Step-by-step method
- Heat 1 cup water as directed for the chosen Earl Grey tea. Brew 2 Earl Grey bags in the water for about 4–5 minutes, following the product instructions for strength, then remove the bags without squeezing heavily. Divide the concentrate between two heatproof mugs.
- Stir 2 tsp granulated sugar and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract into the hot brewed tea, dividing evenly. The sugar is measured for both mugs, not each.
- While tea steeps, warm 1 cup whole milk in a saucepan until steaming, not boiling. Froth with a hand frother or whisk, then divide between mugs, spooning foam on top.
- Serve immediately. Test tea strength, milk froth, sweetness and final mug volume; no lavender, coffee or espresso belongs in the measured London Fog.
Brew while the milk warms
Start the tea in hot water and remove its bags after the selected steep. Stir sugar and vanilla into the hot liquid and divide it between two heatproof mugs. Warm milk only to steaming, not a rolling boil that can form a skin and reduce volume.
Froth with a hand tool or brisk whisk and pour milk over the tea, reserving a spoonful of foam for each top. If foam collapses before pouring, use the milk hot and fresh; don't replace it with whipped cream in the base card.
Taste one plain mug for tea, sweetness and vanilla balance during a kitchen trial. Chefly already has an Earl Grey-and-milk explainer, which can be linked for context, but this page's purpose is a measured drink method rather than another generic article asking whether milk belongs in tea.
Troubleshoot an overly pale latte
A weak brew can disappear beneath the milk. Use the two-bag concentrate and honor steeping instructions; do not simply leave tea bags in the finished drink indefinitely. If bitter, note the tea brand and contact time before changing the ratio.
If milk won't foam, check its temperature and the tool; an overfilled pan may be difficult to whisk. A frother creates a different texture from shaking hot milk in a sealed jar, which can be unsafe. Keep any variation safely tested.
Vanilla sugar can be adjusted later, but measure the final amount before publication. A photo of a lavender-colored or espresso-based drink would contradict the five-ingredient handoff.
A quiet tea break
Serve immediately with a cookie if desired. The Chefly Earl Grey-and-milk page discusses the tea itself; readers who want a precise latte should find the water, milk and sugar measures here, not a duplicate URL for the same explainer.
A prepared dairy tea latte should be cooled and refrigerated promptly if not served. Its best quality and exact storage duration after frothing need a trial, since foam may not survive reheating. Reheat gently, then refroth if a test supports it.
Questions about the brew
Is there coffee in a London Fog?
No. This base uses Earl Grey black tea, water, milk, sugar and vanilla, without espresso.
Can I use loose-leaf Earl Grey?
Yes if measured to the equivalent strength for one cup of water and strained completely; follow the tea package and test flavor.
Can I make the milk portion ahead?
Fresh warm foam is the intended finish. A chilled batch may be reheated but needs a texture trial before a make-ahead promise.
